Raising a puppy for Anchor Assistance Dogs is a big project, but it is a very rewarding experience. Without volunteer puppy raisers, we would not be able to train and provide well adjusted, well mannered dogs to our clients. All of our service puppies need to be raised in a nurturing home with a loving family to teach and guide them. Our puppy raisers commit to taking a puppy into their homes and lives for around a year. During this time, puppy raisers are expected to attend regular puppy training meetings, housetrain and socialize the puppy, teach house and public manners, and basic obedience tasks. This is a wonderful way to learn about service dogs and positive dog training while giving back to the community and helping others in need. Our puppy raising program offers a great community service project and provides an opportunity for the military families of Hampton Roads to have a dog in their homes without making a lifetime commitment to a pet. Please contact us to learn more about this opportunity and our puppy raiser requirements. It is truly a life changing gift of love to raise a service dog puppy for someone else. Raise a puppy, change a life.
